XL, one of the leading telecommunication companies in Indonesia, is the subsidiary of TM, one of the largest telecommunication companies in Asia, through its wholly owned investment arm TM International Sdn Bhd. XL was established in November 1995 and started its commercial operations on 8 October 1996. Currently XL provides Consumer Solutions by providing dual band cellular networks through pre-paid cards jempol and bebas and post-paid card Xplor. Meanwhile, the Business Solutions unit of XL is a provider of leased line, broadband and IP (Internet Protocol)-based corporate solutions. In 2005, TM became the controlling shareholders with 59.7% equity stake in XL.

XL cellular network system is based on GSM 900 system, due to the allocated bandwidth, with additional spectrum of GSM 1800 for improving transmission quality in highly populated areas such as Jakarta, Bandung, Bali, & Surabaya. The GSM 1800 standard is the upper layer of the spectrum, allowing users to transmit data, voice and other contents virtually at higher speed. XL believes that the two bandwidth standards of GSM 900 & GSM 1800 will sufficiently support the development of mobile communication services and users in Indonesia for several years ahead, while newer mobile technology such as 3G is being evaluated and tested.

XL applies efficiency strategy from the start without sacrificing quality, basically by utilizing the allocated bandwidth of frequencies, allocating base transceiver station (BTS) in all points of interconnection in the network, and exploring new technology and technique to improve the radio network features. XL recognizes their customer’s basic need to get connected at all time, and to communicate in clear voice transmission.
